Women Workshop

Professional Skills Development workshops are designed to provide women physicists with professional training in effective negotiation, communication and leadership skills, as well as a special opportunity for networking. The primary workshop goal is to produce more women leaders in physics and to help these women achieve their full potential in the top ranks of their profession. Workshops are usually hosted in conjunction with APS meetings.

Upcoming Workshops

The APS, with NSF grant funding, will provide a workshop for senior women in physics with the goal of providing a framework and tools to be agents of change within their professional circles. The workshop will be held in conjunction with the APS April Meeting 2019.

In today’s world, change is a given, whether in the workplace, the lab, at school, or within APS. Most people experience some level of stress or discomfort when confronting the disruptions change can bring. Whether it is a change in priorities, budgets, direction of a project, or new team members, understanding how we react to change and how to lead others through change is critical to your professional success.

Senior women interested in learning a step-wise process to guide them to more effectively lead change initiatives in their institutions and organizations, should submit an application by 11/30/18. Nominations will also be accepted. Space is limited and attendees will be selected based on application submissions. All expenses for participation in this workshop will be covered by a grant from the NSF.

Workshop Testimonials

"The workshop had a huge impact on my professional life, and I just wish more women physicists could have the opportunity to participate in such a workshop."

"You should keep this effort going: it really boosts our self-confidence. It gives us the feeling of being part of a community and gives us the mentoring that some of us are lacking."

"I can’t count the number of meetings I’ve attended in 15 years. This is the only one where I was 100% engaged from the very first minute to the very last minute. This has been life-changing."

"I gained tangible skills and tactics which I will take back and put into practice in my next department meeting."

"This has been the most effective discussion of issues and problem solving techniques that can be implemented and useful. It was not a gripe session that most of these sessions devolve into and the facilitators were very skillful and personable. I enjoyed this experience very much and I sincerely hope that more people can be exposed to this quality of workshop."

Travel Reimbursement

Participants are responsible for making their own travel and hotel arrangements and may receive reimbursement for 1 night in the conference hotel. Please consult the APS Meetings website for information about hotels near the meeting site, many of which will offer special rates.

Because the workshops are funded by the National Science Foundation, you must be affiliated with a US institution/facility to be eligible for funding consideration. Professional Skills Development Workshops at division meetings or elsewhere are subject to different arrangements.
