Science Writing Intern

The American Physical Society (APS), the world’s leading association of physicists, is offering a full-time Science Writing Intern position starting Summer, 2017. The internship will be a 6-month, full-time paid position, based at APS Headquarters in College Park, MD (near DC Metro Green Line). The Science Writing Intern, under the guidance of the Head of Media Relations, will assist in creating news stories and press releases focusing on physical science topics, while developing journalism skills and assembling a portfolio of materials to establish a career in science journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Assisting the APS Head of Media Relations in preparing press releases about physics research
  • Identifying and summarizing newsworthy journal papers and APS conference presentations.
  • Aiding in Press Room activities at APS conferences by supporting participating journalists and science writers
  • Assisting in arranging and running formal scientific press conferences
  • Writing occasional stories for APS News, Physics Focus, and Inside Science News Service, as time permits
  • Posting items on physics blogs and other APS internet outlets, as time permits
  • Other science writing and media relations activities as needed

Qualifications

  • Advanced undergraduate physics course work, BA/BS in physics or related science preferred. Writing courses or published writing for non-scientists desired.
  • Journalism and English majors with minors in a physical science or extensive physical science coursework will also be considered.
  • Demonstrated writing for general audiences on technically and scientifically challenging topics a plus.
  • General competence and demonstrated interest in a broad range of science topics, photographic skills and audio/video production abilities desirable.
