Campaign and Donor Relations Manager

The American Physical Society (APS) seeks an accomplished Campaign and Donor Relations Manager to enhance fundraising efforts for the Society. APS is a nonprofit membership organization with an operating budget of $55 million dollars and over 54,000 members working in academia, national laboratories, and industry, is the leading society for physicists in the U.S. and throughout the world. This position is based at the APS headquarters office located in College Park, MD (walking distance from the College Park Metro Station).

Position Summary — Partners with the Director of Development as well as other APS leadership to plan and implement fundraising activities that include identifying, cultivating, soliciting and stewarding individual donors, foundations, and corporations. Staffs and manages volunteer committees and develops and implements fundraising strategies for annual, honors and planned giving campaigns. In concert with the Development Coordinator and other APS staff, manages a full range of research, marketing, and finance activities with the goal of promoting a culture of philanthropy, enhancing donor stewardship and engagement, and building the major and planned giving programs. Assists the Director in overseeing the work of the Development Coordinator.

Essential Functions

Development

  • Work with Director to develop and implement successful fundraising strategies.
  • Identify, cultivate, and solicit funding from individuals, corporations, and foundations with the goal of expanding the major gifts portfolio.
  • Strategize and work to increase contributions from members through the annual renewal process.
  • Develop, staff and manage volunteer fundraising committees for APS Honors campaigns.
  • Manage and seek to increase sponsorships for Honors, Journals and Unit activities.

Stewardship

  • Oversee donor acknowledgement process.
  • Together with the Honors Program Manager, plan, implement and staff annual Fellows’ receptions and special events.
  • Manage Development’s component of the annual report.
  • With input from program directors, coordinate the preparation and dissemination of stewardship reports.

Research

  • Oversee use of CRM Database as it relates to Development.
  • Create and maintain prospect lists for use by volunteers, APS Leadership and Staff.
  • Perform in-depth research on individual, corporate, and foundation prospects.
  • Qualify major prospects to determine their affinity for APS’s mission and propensity to give.
  • Prepare corporate, foundation, and individual profiles and briefings for use in donor visits.

Marketing

  • Integrate donor-centric language throughout fundraising communications.
  • Serve as point-person for developing and managing print and online fundraising communication with Communications, IT and Membership for annual, honors and planned giving campaigns.
  • Assist in developing analytic gift reports.
  • Create and implement strategies for donor acquisition, retention, and upgrading to higher levels based on giving histories.
  • Raise awareness about APS programs (Education & Diversity, Outreach, Public Affairs, International Affairs] at APS meetings and events, by disseminating information and speaking with donors and prospects.

Finance

  • Work with business partners to streamline online donation process and ensure that database financial reporting accurately captures donor giving history.
  • Develop financial reports that assure compliance with donor designations and IRS regulations.
  • Manage pledge renewals and honors billing.
  • Reconcile gift accounting with Finance.
  • Prepare development reports for Leadership to present at APS Board meetings.

Qualifications

Education: B.A./B.S. degree required

Experience: Minimum of 5 - 7 years experience in the area of fundraising, research, special events planning and/or marketing.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Fundraising experience, including knowledge and use of donor management software, e.g., Salesforce and Blackbaud/Raiser’s Edge, and membership databases. Proficient computer skills, including knowledge of Microsoft products (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) and Google applications. Familiarity with planned giving and finance management programs. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, writing, communication and statistical skills. Experience in working with and motivating volunteers.
